The new Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre in Oxford
We are nearing the end of our fundraising activities for Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres, our charity of the year for 2013. It’s been a busy year with a variety of events from charity cycles and walks to collection buckets and Christmas stalls. Recently, we had the opportunity to visit the site of the new centre (they are currently operating out of an interim Portakabin at the back of the Churchill Hospital) to see the progress of the build and hear about the whole process from the architects and builders.
On a rainy Monday in November a group of Maggie’s supporters gathered by a building site outside the front of the Cancer Centre at the Churchill Hospital in Headington. We put on our hard hats and high-vis vests and stepped onto the framework of the new centre. The architects talked through the design and the builder then told us about the work they have done so far and talked about timescales for the rest of the building to go up.
It was really fascinating to hear from the people behind the new centre and to really get a picture of how it’s going to look, and the logic behind the design. Afterwards, in true Maggie’s style, we went inside for a cup of tea and could chat a bit more to other supporters.
At the end of November some of our staff helped to man a stall at the Oxford Christmas Extravaganza in St Giles. The stall stocked Christmas cards, candles, and home-baked cakes as well as selling raffle tickets. There was a great buzz about the place and we’re pleased to report that lots of Christmas cards were sold over the weekend!
Our final activity for 2013 is our online charity auction, which is now LIVE and runs until Monday 16th December. It’s a great opportunity to buy some really special presents AND give money to a fantastic local charity at the same time! Click here to see the list of items.
