Charity of the Year 2013
We are delighted to announce that our Charity of the Year 2013 has been chosen. In the past, charity fundraising and volunteering was done on an office-by-office basis. In 2009 we decided to change this and focus the entire company’s efforts into one charity and concentrate on raising as much money as possible. In order for the fundraising to be effective we have a nominated charity every alternate year, rather than every year, so that we are not constantly asking for donations and sponsorship.
In January this year we gave every member of staff the opportunity to nominate a charity, whether it was a local or national one. We had a good response, with 12 charities being put forward for the ‘big vote’. After a week of voting one charity was the clear winner…Maggie’s Cancer Centre had a whopping 42.9% of the votes!
Maggie’s Centres are for anyone affected by cancer. They are places where people are welcome whenever they need support – from just being diagnosed or undergoing treatment, to post-treatment, recurrence, end-of-life or in bereavement. They also welcome family and friends, as they are often affected by cancer as well. Over 2 million people in the UK are living with cancer – a figure which is increasing by more than 3% each year.
The Oxford Centre is currently operating out of a Portacabin on the Churchill Hospital site and building of the incredible new centre has just started. Situated opposite the cancer centre at the Churchill Hospital, the new Maggie’s Oxford will continue to offer professional emotional and psychological support, practical information on benefits and nutrition, as well as courses to help cope with stress and anxiety. As well as programmed activities and courses, Maggie’s also welcomes people who want to drop-in when they need to.
The average cost of running a Maggie’s Centre is £590,000 per year. Thanks to their supporters, they are able to offer their services to those who need them completely free-of-charge. It’s a very exciting time to be involved with the charity, and we’re looking forward to seeing the building take shape throughout 2013 as we help them to raise the funds needed to run the centre.
We have met with Maggie’s and are now in the planning stages for our volunteer work and generating fundraising ideas. In the past, we have been successful with:
- Volunteering in the charity’s shops
- Taking part in large-scale events
- Helping man the phones at a Tele-thon
- Marshalling car parks at events
- Gardening at the charity’s centre
- Asking our landlords to donate a day’s rent
- Manning stalls at events
- Bucket collections
We are looking forward to working with and supporting Maggie’s Oxford, and will post updates throughout the year.
