What’s going on in Oxfordshire: Family-fun activities this bank holiday weekend


While it’s been an incredibly warm summer, the most recent weather changes have indicated that it’s time for the school year to begin again. However, the fun isn’t over quite yet as the bank holiday weekend is coming up. Here are our recommendations for family-fun activities in Oxfordshire.

Event: Oxford Storytelling Festival

Location: Waterperry House and Gardens, OX33 1LA

Date: Friday, August 24th at 5pm – Monday, August 27th at 12pm

One of the UK’s most magical festivals is coming to Waterperry House and Gardens, featuring famous authors, exciting musicians and glamping. Families and friends are invited to come together and connect through the art of storytelling.

Event: Peter Rabbit: Mischief and Mayhem

Location: The Oxfordshire Museum, Fletcher’s House Park Street Woodstock OX20 1SN

Date: Ongoing until Saturday, September 7th at 5pm

Cost: Free

Visit the Oxfordshire Museum to join the fun adventures of Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit. This exhibition will bring the family joy, revealing rare original artworks and manuscripts. Children are also welcome to play in an interactive learning area.

Event: Foodies Festival

Location: South Parks, Headington Road, Oxford, OX3 0EB

Date: Saturday, August 25th at 11am – Monday, August 27th at 6pm

Cost: £18.00 (Adults), £5.00 (Young Adults aged 13-17) and free for children under the ages of 12 who do not require a ticket.

With over 12 festivals throughout the summer, the Foodies Festival is coming back to Oxford. Join the mouth-watering fun through workshops and tastings with famous chefs, and dance to live performances by The Hooziers, Dodgy and Toploader.

Event: Tiddler & Other Terrific Tales

Location: Oxford Playhouse, Beaumont Street, Oxford, UK, OX1 2LW

Date: Ongoing until Saturday, August 25th at 2pm

Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s Tiddler & Other Terrific Tales can bring you under the sea, in a jungle and on a farm in under 55 minutes! Woven through music, creative characters and puppetry, the production is filled with laughter and a whole lot of fun for the family to enjoy.

Event: Tolkien: Maker of Middle-Earth

Location: Weston Library, Broad Street, Oxford, OX1 3B6

Date: Ongoing until Sunday, October 28th

Cost: Free but must be reserved beforehand either through the website, the phone or at the reception desk.

Explore the world of Tolkien through his amazing legacy as an artist, poet and author. The exhibition takes you on a journey through his most beloved pieces from The Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings. There is also a Tolkien Trail which you can download on your mobile, used to explore Oxford through his eyes.
