Under the skin of the letting market

Here we share news and views on both the local letting market in & around Oxfordshire and all planned and recent legislation.

We battle the elements so that you don’t have to

At Finders Keepers we were lucky that none of the properties we let and manage were affected by the significant flooding. However, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to repair the damage from the strong winds and heavy storms.

By the end of last week we had more than 30 reports of incidents involving fences (Photo 1). We have a network of trusted contractors and gardeners that have worked with us for numerous years,  whom we contacted immediately, and within a few hours were on site with our Property Mangers to assess the damage and make repairs. The process of managing these incidents can be time consuming; a number of the fences were boundary walls which meant that neighbours needed to be contacted as well as the insurance companies, and quotes had to be supplied before repairs can go ahead.
A large tree neighbouring one of our properties in Weston on the Green fell in the storm last weekend (Photo 2). This caused damage to the sheds in the garden of the property we manage as the roots of the tree were underneath the shed. Removal of the tree has been arranged and work to repair the sheds is ongoing as we negotiate on behalf of our landlord with the owner of the tree and the landlord’s insurance company!

The storm over the weekend wreaked havoc on the garden wall of a property in Summertown (Photo 4). Carly Neilson, Property Department Manager at our North Oxford office, visited the property with our contractor soon after the tenant reported the problem. An estimate has been made to rebuild the wall and work will begin promptly to secure the property.

In Oxford we have been on high alert of the flooding near the Abingdon and Botley roads. Our Property Managers in our Central Oxford Office have been patrolling affected areas (Photo 3 and 5), working with the Environment Agency and advising tenants on practices to prevent damage.
