Two stories illustrating the need for regulation
Flick through this blog and you’ll find several pieces arguing that the letting industry needs to be regulated.
We do not want to unnecessarily spread a climate of fear, but two articles from yesterday illustrate the need to improve the regulation of the private rental sector, although they concern two different subjects:
“Fraud by rogue letting agents” – The FT carries a piece about fraudulent behaviour by cowboy agents, read here.
“Landlord jailed for wrongful eviction” in Oxford, read here in the Oxford Mail.
Decent, robust regulation would greatly help prevent the issues in the first article and it is hard to believe that such practices still go on in 2010.
The issue regarding wrongful eviction is more complex, but a good letting agent knows the correct processes (which are very clear) and is very unlikely ever to create the unfortunate situation in the Oxford Mail article.
