Charity of the Year 2013
End of year reflection
Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre provides free, comprehensive support for anyone affected by cancer from its base at the Churchill Hospital in Headington. 2013 was a very exciting time to be involved with this charity as they were about to move from their interim Portakabin to their amazing new site at the front of the cancer centre. You can read more about each activity by clicking, but here is a summary of the year:
Collection tins: a vital source of income, but not necessarily the most glitzy activity! As well as having collection tins in each of our offices, we manned a collection outside Tesco in Bicester and M&S in Summertown over the summer. Volunteers commented that they felt surprised at how rewarding it was, and how touching to hear of people's connections with this local charity.
Total raised: £598.94
Maggie's to Maggie's cycle: A team of cyclists from Finders Keepers took part in a 45-mile challenge from Maggie's Cheltenham to Maggie's Oxford. After an early start and a warm welcome from the team at the fully-formed Cheltenham Centre our team set off on the long journey back to Oxford. They reached the Oxford Centre in the afternoon and had a great reception from the team there with sandwiches, drinks and ice creams.
Total raised: £3,360.00
Donate a Day's Rent: Our "Donate a Day's Rent" campaign is a great way of raising funds for our charity of the year. We wrote to our landlords asking if they would sponsor our year's activities and had a fantastic reaction with 221 landlords asking us to collect a day's rent from their remittance.
Total raised: £9,898.83
London Culture Crawl: A team from Finders Keepers joined hundreds of other Maggie's supporters to walk the 15-mile route through London at night. We got to take in some sights such as the London Eye and the Foreign Office which made it an interesting walk, but it certainly wasn't easy and we felt that we earned every penny of fundraising!
Total raised: £3218.00
Charity Clay Target Shoot: Our annual Charity Shoot was back and was as popular as ever with people from all levels taking part. Despite the weather being a bit blustery, everyone enjoyed the day and some beginners even discovered a real natural talent for the sport!
Total raised: £524.78
Christmas Market: Ten members of the team volunteered at the Maggie's stall at the Christmas Market on St Giles. As well as home made cakes, people could buy Christmas cards, candles and raffle tickets.
Total raised: £115.72
Online Christmas Auction: The final activity of the year was our online auction. Our teams across the offices gathered some fantastic items from salon treatments and restaurant vouchers to exclusive riding lessons with a World Number One and a signed Sebastian Vettel top. We ran the auction for two weeks at the start of December and it was a huge success.
Total raised: £2528.50
Individual sponsorship: Mrs Lee, an East Oxford landlord, often fundraises for our nominated Charity of the Year and 2013 was no different. She hosted a charity wine tasting and ran the Great North Run in aid of Maggie's.
Total raised: £560.00
We would like to extend a huge "thank you" to everyone who donated sponsorship or valuable time and helped us to get to a total of £22,855.77. We are very grateful to those who faced the challenges of some of our activities and to every single person who sponsored us or put money in our collection tins. A final thanks to Anna O'Keeffe, the Community Fund Raiser from the Oxford Centre, who has been a great help throughout the year.
"Everyone at Maggie's Oxford is so grateful to Finders Keepers for voting us as their charity of the year. We are absolutely delighted and thrilled to be working with Finders Keepers at such an important time for Maggie's Oxford, with the new building work of the purpose built Centre. Finders Keepers support has helped to raise an amazing amount of money for the charity as well as awareness of Maggie's Oxford at such an important time of growth."
