Attack the hills on your bike If you pass posses of cyclists on the weekend near the Beckley TV transmitter, it is because they come for the hills. Oxfordshire is relatively flat, and cyclists crave a bit of uphill. You can approach Beckley from four different directions, and the road up through Barton in East Oxford will be a not-so-gentle introduction. From there head to Islip or Horton-cum-Studley and double back for more gradient.

Try the Otmoor circuit on foot On spring weekends the roads to the east of Oxford see runners training for the London marathon. Many of them are doing the ‘Otmoor Circuit’ of 18+ miles through villages such as Islip, Murcott, Horton-cum-Studley and Woodperry. For a map click here.

Get the clubs out There are three membership clubs to the east of Oxford which might suit different tastes and price brackets. Studley Wood Golf Club, Waterstock Golf Course and The Oxfordshire all generate positive reports and are easy to get to from the M40. If you just want a range to hone your swing, try Southfields Golf Range in Thame.
